Deferring - it turns out that 5.2.9 has been out for some time. I won't
be building that until my next desktop build (for me, 5.2.8 seems ok).
Meanwhile, I've noted the following with 5.2.8: the sed is not needed, and
make check runs quickly (less than 19 minutes on my phenom, 1 core maxed
out - it won't use more than 1 core).
However, 1 of 2 tests fails - for 75/43550 PPDs there an error:

Looking at the gimp-print-devel archives, I'm not sure if this matters or
not. All the affected PPDs are for bjc PIXMA printers (I think those are
newly added in this version), I only have an epson.
