Now that you mentioned it, I remember having a similar issue, but I failed
to add the solution to the book. Maybe I wasn't contributor anymore at the
time I discovered the issue.
I have this part in my install script:

chmod 700 /etc/openldap/slapd.d /var/lib/openldap
chown -R ldap:ldap /etc/openldap/slapd.d /var/lib/openldap
chmod 640 /etc/openldap/slapd.conf /etc/openldap/slapd.ldif
/etc/openldap/DB_CONFIG.example
chown root:ldap /etc/openldap/slapd.conf /etc/openldap/slapd.ldif
/etc/openldap/DB_CONFIG.example
}}}
I believe that this configuration was taken either from Debian or
Archlinux, I am not sure. It does work however.
