Does not work for me. I've just booted 3.16.2 with LFS-7.6 x86_64.
For the kernel I turned off CONFIG_FW_LOADER_USER_HELPER (a fallback,
no longer required unless non-std) and cleared 'External firmware
blobs to build into the kernel'.

The console is 80x25 instead of 100x40, no penguins, and setting up
the console stopped with an error message:
putfont: KDFONTOP: Invalid argument

This is because of the following in the log:
[ 0.680578] [drm] radeon: 512M of VRAM memory ready
[ 0.680610] [drm] radeon: 1024M of GTT memory ready.
[ 0.680655] [drm] Loading ARUBA Microcode
[ 0.680702] ni_cp: Failed to load firmware "radeon/ARUBA_pfp.bin"
[ 0.680737] [drm:cayman_init] *ERROR* Failed to load firmware!
[ 0.680769] radeon 0000:00:01.0: Fatal error during GPU init
[ 0.680803] [drm] radeon: finishing device.
[ 0.687824] [TTM] Finalizing pool allocator
[ 0.687860] [TTM] Finalizing DMA pool allocator
[ 0.687927] [TTM] Zone kernel: Used memory at exit: 0 kiB
[ 0.687967] [drm] radeon: ttm finalized
[ 0.688281] radeon: probe of 0000:00:01.0 failed with error -2

Will rebuild the kernel.

ĸen [ hope that has my usual kra instead of k, I just get a small
square with the font from the bios :) ]

Sometimes she went to bed as early as 6 a.m.
