I can vaguely remember posting that, and I confirm that gimp's help
for me opens in a new tab in firefox (I share ~/ across all my
builds, so it has been many years since I set this up).

But as to what I had to change, I have no idea.  And I suspect that
searching the list archives will not be fun.  But google found a
pointer at https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-help.html (section 12.2 of
the manual), it points to Section 1.5 (figure 12.5) in
https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-pimping.html#gimp-prefs-help
