nearly same problem here - no ATI card available for testing at all ... I
also only applied the (second) patch and did a configure+make. No make
install and of course no test.
If that remains as the last ticket before 8.3 release, I'd propose to
simply push it over to 8.4. Looks like not too many people have this
problem - while it seems that it really exists and may be really annoying
for Christopher.
