I went back to python3 for my own build, using
{{{
PYTHON=python3 ./configure ... --with-python=/usr/bin/python3
}}}
and
{{{
PYTHON=python3 make $MAKEFLAGS test
}}}
(obviously make itself should be using py3, but with the tests, who knows)
and on two systems
where python2 has already been installed that seems to work ok.
