Sorry for the noise folks. I've determined that the logging dir can be set in the gdm.conf file. I'll update the book to reflect this. I also noticed that if you tweak the gdm.conf file just right, you can include an oversized (bytesize larger than 65545) file to use as ~/.face file and have photo of each user in the login screen. It's kind of cool, but nothing I'm sure everybody doesn't already know about. I've just always been a startx guy, but now, seeing how I'm sortof attached to the GNOME desktop, GDM seems to be a quick and easy way to go GUI. Also noted with GDM (this is my first time to actually install it), you have the option when you choose the logout option to reboot or shutdown the computer.
