Sorry, after reading what I just wrote it doesn't really say much.
Please report if you have any problems with it, though. It is indeed
useful to enable javascipt if you want a little more than a barebones
browser.

It appears to be the --enable-javascript option itself that's causing
the problem - I just compiled links pre17 with --enable-javascript (no
graphics) and it segfaults at linuxquestions.net. Anyway, whatever the
problem is, it seems to have been fixed in pre18.
