No, a sed to the _user's_ prefs.js will work fine (I didn't know this or
look into it, before posting my reply), but please don't make it a
default set of instructions. Wrap it with something to the effect of
"If your [window manager || desktop suite] does not support defalut
protocol handlers, then these commands will allow [firefox ||
thunderbird] to handle links correctly."
Of course. I think in the original thread we said we didn't want to make
it a rule for everyone. But a sed that accompanies explanatory text
would be very helpful.
Btw, I could be wrong, but I think the window manager or desktop suite
has nothing to do with this particular item. This is an internal
*thunderbird* issue. Thunderbird doesn't know how to handle http or ftp
protocol links unless you tell it where to look. Do you know of a
desktop suite that drops in its protocol handlers for T-Bird's use?
Actually it works the other way arround. Thunderbird passes the link to
the shell whatever it is..in my case gnome. Gnome then looks and sees
that 'Thunderbird' is my preferd application for the 'mailto' protocol,
or 'Firefox' for 'http/ftp' protocol. ('/usr/bin/thunderbird -mail %s'
or '/usr/bin/firefox %s') In Gnome, this can be found in
'Desktop->Preferences->Prefered Applications'. It's been a while but
IIRC, KDE has similar, though it's not as easy to rid yourself of
konqerer, assuming that I remmeber as well as I think I might. :-)
