Allow me to copy part of what I just said in another thread, so it's not
lost. Aplogies for the redundancy:
If I had a magic wand, I'd break 'recommended' into three parts:
- things you can disable, but you most probably don't want to
example: libjpeg for gtk2
- things you can disable if you don't need/want some extra functionality
example: gnupg for thunderbird
- things the BLFS editors install (their personal recommendation).
example: gimp-print for the gimp
