I'll revert it, but just for clarification, this was the rationale. Say I decide when installing X that I prefer my fonts to go in the standard location, e.g., /usr/lib/X11/fonts. Later, if I rebuild fontconfig for any reason, that path will be added to the defaults in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf. Then I'd have the bitmapped fonts back in search path. It's an outlying case, but I thought it was important. I'm working on the X fixes now.
