If it's the helvetica fonts that is the problem then wouldn't the simple solution be to install the adobe-{100,75}dpi fonts in /usr/share/X11/fonts and all the others in /usr/share/fonts? That way we keep support for international web pages and banish the helvetica fonts where they can't cause any trouble.
