Hmm. Well, I think DejaVu needs to be one word. I just stuffed it in
.Xresources. Actually, I have to be fair that I hacked fonts.conf to
prefer DejaVu Sans Mono as the top monospace font, but here's what I
have in .Xresources:
*VT100.locale: 1
! *VT100.faceName: "DejaVu Sans Mono"
! *VT100.faceName: "Luxi Mono"
*VT100.faceName: "Monospace"
I think I'll agree about DejaVu as one word, although these resources
seem to be somewhat variable. I'm on a CLFS box at the moment (still X
6.9.0) and I _thought_ I'd installed all the fonts that I added to the
other one, except for the one that handles the International Phonetic
Alphabet - that's a zip file, so it comes in a later script, but neither
firefox nor konqueror is doing as well as I expected. I've also had to
set LANG=en_GB.UTF-8 as well as LC_ALL because I was picking up
LANG=en_GB from somewhere.
Anyway, the following seem to work in my .Xresources
*VT100*locale: UTF-8
*VT100*faceName: "DejaVu Sans Mono"
*VT100*faceSize: 12
Note that I absolutely need the UTF-8 in the locale resource, otherwise
only latin characters are displayed. Also, I'm using a faceSize of 12
where the old fixed font used --20- (this is a 20" monitor). 13 would
probably be better when I try to distinguish specific characters (e.g.
which sort of 'umlaut' on a hungarian o, and is a diaeresis oe or ae),
but it's far too tallfor my preferred 100x40 xterm. People with smaller
monitors will probably want a faceSize of 10 or less.
My xterm now seems to display all latin-derived characters and
cyrillic, but not hebrew, japanese, thai (I haven't found test utf-8
text for greek or chinese). For the moment, this will do. I'd like to
get it displaying -everything-, but that will have to wait.
Trying *VT100*utf8fonts*font1 appeared not to help.
The really odd thing now is that gucharmap is showing all available
glyphs forevery font, even where they are not native to it, so it no
longer helps a lot when I try to decide which font to experiment with.
I'm thinking I'll probably drop arkpandora, or else only use Tymes from
it, and perhaps drop freefont, but that will have to wait for a fresh
build.
