In fact, I'm far better off without arkpandora - Tymes is actually
nothing like Times Roman (Luxi Serif is passable). I thought I was
doing ok without freefont, until I looked at a decent test page in
konqueror -

(specifically, the links in the left column) and discovered I had
nothing for hebrew and thai. Installing freefont fixed that, so I guess
it's useful (I now have what looks like plausible rendering for every
glyph on that page). I'm also using charis SIL, although I don't think
it makes a difference to that particular page.
