I agree.  The modular view is much more accurate.  You need libraries
such as libX11 and libXext to provide certain functions in an X
environment.  The only monolithic part left is xorg-server.  It *does*
have a lot of components that allow you to run an X server.  And the
proof of these statements is what Richard said.  You don't need to
install every application provided to have a functioning X windowing
system.  I probably have most of the headers and libraries installed,
but about 1/8 of the apps or less.

I don't consider rman to be part of the X windowing system at all.
It's just another utility needed by an application that runs in an X
environment.
