Best I can tell, I see it as you do. That there is no reference
to libjpeg or libtiff at all in the sources and the dependencies
should be completely removed.

I suppose in its day, the GTK+-1 instructions are like the current
GTK+-2 instructions in that we "recommend" jpeg and tiff to be
installed as do the developers. Only thing is, when GTK+-1 was
put in the book, there were no "recommended" dependencies, so
required had to suffice.

That's the strange part, it is not even an optional dependency.
