For servers I completely agreee - I am just finishing off one right now
that is based on LFS6.3 + some BLFS + Asterisk.

It is on the Desktop that it gets more awkward.

For example, when "testing" or wanting to experiment with a different
Softphone client, about 4 or 5 clicks in Synaptic and I can get
installed various softphones with various dependencies. If I decide on
the one I like, removing the others is equally easy and all the cruft
that had to be installed with it gets removed too.

With the help of Randy and Dan, IIRC, getting Asterisk installed was an
interesting exercise that showed me the use of DESTDIR. This obviously
helps and might be the way forward for me...

It seems that there is little support for an idea of a managed/packaged
LFS so it is probably not worth pursuing further at this stage. (That's
totally cool BTW. This is one of the reasons why I believe OSS is
becoming so "mainstream". The development process is kind of true
Darwinian Evolution in software - crap ideas die out pretty quickly,
good ones just keep getting better & better by incremental improvement).

Me, off to try and come up with some better ideas ;-)
