Oops, it appears I've been to hasty. I'm picking up the installed
.so file from my system during the make, which of course works,
but will fail if it doesn't exist on the system.

My apologies for earlier comments. I suppose we're all entitled
to a mistake now and then. I just wish mine weren't so often.
