I'm unable to establish how many tests fail without ghostscript in the current version of cairo.
With my normal system, the first attempt at make check hung at what turns out to be the end of the smask-text testsuite. Second run got all the way through, so I've updated the total failures and total number of tests. I then moved gs out of the way and repeated. Three times, all hung at this point. Moved gs back to where it should be, gave it another three attempts, again each hung here. Somebody else will have to update the number of tests that fail if gs is not found, I've just reworded it to 'many' for the moment.
