I build LFS 6.4 and X.org 7.4 as you did and ended up in a locked machine after starting X. It seems, that recent xorg-server need hal or the above option. (Needs to be verified) If you decide to use hal with recent udev (130 as of LFS 6.4) you need a little patch, because udevinfo is no more in udev (see http://wiki.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/ticket/2679) With this patch I run xorg-server 1.5.3 on LFS 6.4 (udev 130) with hal 0.5.11 without any xorg.conf
