 After posting that, it occurred to me to try building libtirpc with
*only* the no-des patch (which updates Makefile.in and therefore
doesn't want autotools and is incompatible with the debian/PLD
glibc-2.14 patch which needs them).  Builds fine, but mount still
fails - I can see rpc.statd starts, mount then complains as before
that it isn't running.  In boot.log there is just a message that nfs
mount failed, and no details to be found there, nor in daemon.log or
sys.log.
