I've put a preview of the changes for moving the legacy gnome
packages at
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/~ken/tmp/blfs-legacy-move/

The index now has a new chapter 35, 'Deprecated GNOME Packages'
with libraries that will continue, for a time, in the book after
gnome-3 has been merged in. Each of these packages includes an
explanatory Note.

I've also moved gnome-media into Audio Utilities (now chapter 41)
and put a comment on it, as well as pointing to volumecontrol (ugly,
gtk2, but works as a mixer) and gvolwheel (known to work well on
icewm, but *doesn't* contain mute/unmute functionality).

This preview contents are probably slightly out of date now, and I
haven't updated the details of the legacy/deprecated packages. This
preview is just for comment on wording, etc.

                          - + - + -

Perhaps I should also note that although I was building all of
these packages until last month (ostensibly, the libraries were for
abiword and gnumeric, as well as gnome-mixer), I've now discovered
that *for my use case* there is no difference in the functionality
or user interface of abiword or gnumeric if I admit them, merely a
reduction in the number of libraries linked in!

But, I don't have a full gnome-2 desktop and I'm in no hurry to
throw out what people *might* be relying on. I might suggest adding
gvolwheel and removing gnome-mixer in perhaps 3 months, once we can
all see how gnome-3 and pulse are doing. But at the moment, I've
only proved that gvolwheel works nicely on icewm (from the programs
menu, NOT from the startup script!), I'll be testing it on fluxbox
in a couple of days or so. And pavucontrol is perhaps a possible
package to consider - dunno, I didn't manage to get pulse working
last month, will suspend judgement until I've built a gnome-3
desktop.
