Since version 23.3, Emacs freezes at start-up with 100% CPU usage when launched from a terminal or with the “-nw” option while using GLib 2.31+. Upstream does not seem to be concerned with this bug: http://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=9754 A Debian patch is available: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/emacs23/+bug/902043
Regarding optional dependencies for Emacs: libungif (old and external to the book) could be replaced with giflib; GTK+ and librsvg (which implies GTK+) could be added.
