I'am not as anti-g-i as Andy. If it builds, even if the package is not really needed for some specific purpose, it is OK with me. Having worked with KDE and/or GNOME for ten years, I have no real preference, except that when a new version comes out for one desktop, it is better to use the other one, which is more stable. Right now, KDE4 (after a few years) is mature. GNOME 3 is closer to infancy, so KDE4 runs better.
