In my most-recent builds (October), makedepend still shows up as an optional dependency for attr. I used to build attr after xorg, and on those old builds attr's configure did find it. Nowadays it finds /bin/true and is happy to build without makedepend. Mesa _used_ to use makedepend, at least between 7.0.2 and 9.0.1, but as of 9.2 it no longer referenced it. Firefox used to check for makedepend, but no longer does so.
