Has any one ever suggested adding a non-canonical link to the S3TC webpage on freedesktop.org to explore using s3tc texture compression in LibMesa?
Currently the website URL is: http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/S3TC/ for the main page with the link to the development hub. The current release is tagged at 1.0.1 on the developer page here: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~mareko/libtxc_dxtn/ however, the source package is only available via download using git and is roughly 3 years in age, however. I have tested it, and it does indeed build and install correctly and work when using a properly supported GPU in LibMesa. The only concerns seem to be using this as a binary redistributable package due to the license surrounding s3tc algorithms and even though the extension is available, you have to rebuild LibMesa as a cyclical dependency to add build flag USE_EXTERNAL_DXTN_LIB=1 at running the configure script. Nothign seems to be mentioned or hinted at even in vagueness towards private usage however.
