Honestly, nothing comes close to good old alsamixer for me.

I appreciate QasMixer[1] (qt-based) for eye-candy, completeness and
usability,
but in the end I don't need it.

On my Gentoo, I installed volumeicon[2] just to deal with laptop's volume
buttons with no extra effort, but I could live without it.
