It isn't the UNIX only developers who prefer CMake. It's the developers that develop for platforms other than UNIX, including MS Windows.

CMake is better suited for such systems. In other words, CMake has better cross platform support and support for build utilities other than GNU Make (ninja, MS Visual Studio NMake, etc - see -G output).
