I understand now. Yes it does seem to want QTDIR to be pointing to the root of the expanded tarball.
I have updated the book already, with instructions which allow to build qt4 and qtwebkit (and it seems that everything is going OK so far in the process of building the remaining KDE4 packages, which I am doing right now,).
Good. I saw the commit after I posted the previous message. I think there is only one kde4 package that needs QtWebkit, but I can't remember which one right now.
