I think this is fallout from freetype-2.6.1. When I tried to build

Looking at tihe patch we use, it appears to no longer be needed if
freetype-2.6.1 is used
Agreed. It builds fine without the patch for me.
(build-tested, but at the moment I don't
think I've got a ps viewer in this build). I normally use evince to
test ps files, but I suppose I can use 'display' from ImageMagick
in a little while (if I can read the output on the chequerboard
background it will probably have).
How do I get ps support in evince? Do you install libspectre?

So, I suppose we need to drop the patch from the book ?
I was able to use paps to convert a file from text to ps with paps and then from ps
to pdf with ps2pdf. I ccould then use evince or okular to read the pdf.
So I would say yes, remove the patch.
