Ken identified the need to run update-desktop-database and there is rationale in the Command Explanations. It is not, strictly speaking, required for build, but it is for proper execution.
My problem was not that it wasn't installed. It was because I responded (incorrectly) to warnings when running update-desktop-database.
Don't you both think we should add gsettings-desktop-schema as required by yelp?
We expect that recommended dependencies are installed, but I do not have a problem with promoting desktop-file-utils to required. However, I don't think it's needed.
