His contribution to 7.8 (and also yours) was understated by the
number of commits : some of us prefer to make separate commits for
individual packages. Yes, we will miss his vast amount of work.
And I usually do 2 commits per update: one for update and the next for
introduced typos :-)
I've always been impressed by Fernando's pace for updates. When I do one
update, it roughly takes 2 days for me to finish. Fernando finishes
several updates in one day... Also, he has good ideas to make the book
more accessible to users, which I very often try to copy. I hope he'll
come back.
