I guess my reply did not pass through as I cannot see it in this discussion. I had a similar issue with previous versions of openssl, where the installed library was an empty file. This happened when using parallel install, and using make install -j1 fixed the issue. I use MAKEFLAGS=-j5 in the environment. Parallel build is fine though.
