Thanks to you both, and to DJ, for this. I still don't know what happened on this machine (it is mostly being used to try to hack on ImageMagick-6 in /tmp, I do not wish to even kill X at the moment). Anyway, with 3.28.1 both qupzilla and firefox showed the problem. When I went back to 3.27.2 qupzilla was fine, but as I said firefox was still broken. I then tried deleting ALL the firefox history (a right PITA for the next few days until I can remember all the places I want to go :) but that did not help. Also, my home page is slashdot, and after trashing the history slashdot lost all its graphics giving me just plain large text on a white background. I assume that something is still holding on to one or other of the nss-3.28.1 libs. I've now rebuilt firefox with that sed, and the problem has gone. But in future, I think I'm going to be in less of a hurry to use newer versions of nss.
