Found this on an obscure web site:

"PulseAudio was added in the 14.2 cycle because bluez 5 dropped Alsa support completely. In other words, unlike Firefox, the bluez upstream has ripped out all the Alsa code. This was compounded by other upstreams that depend on bluez dropping their own compatibility for bluez 4 from their new releases. It's only partially true to say "Pulseaudio is the default"; it is installed by default, and used by default (see /etc/asound.conf), but the default in as many applications as possible is to use Alsa if Pulseaudio is not present."

I don't know how accurate this is, but is sounds reasonable.
