I understand your reluctance to delete it (got caught similarly on
ppc or ppc64 in the gnome-2 days), and similarly for *most* static
libs in BLFS. So what my own scripts do at the end of each package
is to find the .la archives, apart from those for ImageMagick -
Armin said ghoto, I think, is similar - and then instead of deleting
them I rename them to somelib.la.hidden.
I also do this for any static .a except for a few from LFS. If they
ever turn out to be needed (for static libs, hello kde, for libtool
archives - none that I remember) I can just move them back to the
original name.
