Ken, Are you building with any CFLAGS enabled?
Since many moons ago, I've been testing with a range of CFLAGS (O2,Os,Og), sometime accounting for my processor (with alfs, I've got O2 pipe and march=native) but otherwise not and these have been the cause of non-reproducible failures.
