While I was testing the latest tyexlive-2018-pre source I discovered
that recent versions of poppler break things. The version we had in
the 8.2 release was fine, but using 0.62 on pretest I had to:
mv -v texk/web2c/pdftexdir/pdftoepdf{-newpoppler,}.cc
mv -v texk/web2c/pdftexdir/pdftosrc{-newpoppler,}.cc
I assume that those files are not in the 2017 tarball because it
predates the problem.
Now that we have moved to 0.63 there was further breakage.
Fortunately, Jerry James has fixed it in fedora's 2017 build and
I've applied that to the current source (a few hundred lines further
on) and now passed it upstream.
TL2018 is getting close to freezing the source, and updates for the
binary (using tlmgr) stopped a few weeks ago. So at the moment I'm
not inclined to fix this unless people shout.
The fixed 2017 patch to add the two -newpoppler.cc files can be
found at:
https://src.fedoraproject.org/cgit/rpms/texlive-base.git/plain/texlive-20170520-new-poppler.patch
Also, texlive can use --with-system-potrace (actually, it always
could, but we didn't used to have it and I only noticed the option
while looking at a build failure in earlier 2018-pretest (which was
fixed by reading the README in pdftexdir and using the new files).
Similarly, I'm not intending to fix that until 2018 is released (and
htere is always a delay between sending sources to be pressed on
DVDs and making the source available.

the creation of time and space and matter and it does Not Fade Away.
