With gucharmap-10.0.4, I get an error:
undefined reference to symbol 'dlsym@@GLIBC_2.2.5'
Upstream has committed a fix just after the release:

For us adding LIBS="-ldl" before ./configure is enough.
I'll modify the book, but since the reason is long to explain, I write
