I thinking of reverting to 0.49.2 to solve this in the short term,
unless someone here has found a solution.

You should revert to 0.49.2 if you wish to use GNOME 3.30.
GNOME 3.32 should include fixes for this. If it doesn't, I have a lot
more work cut out for me than originally intended. I believe it's
deprecated functionality no longer being acceptable.
