Good evening,

Earlier today it was discovered that there are complications with the combination of tzdata2020b and glib2-2.66.2 that result in invalid times after European Daylight Savings Time ends on October 25th, 2020. This update should make it into the next render of the book as I just submitted it.

I'm writing this email to urge everyone who has glib2 installed (2.64.x or 2.66.x) to update to 2.66.2 if you have tzdata2020b or later installed, since it provides fixes for that problem as well as one that affects systems in the rest of the world (invalid timezone maps when using GNOME Control Center). From the upstream announcement this morning:

News
====

* Important and time-critical fix to DST transitions which will happen in Europe
  on 2020-10-25 on distributions which use the ‘slim’ tzdata format (which is
  now the default in tzdata/tzcode 2020b) (work by Claudi M., LRN) (#2224)

* Further timezone handling changes to restore support for changing the timezone
  when `/etc/localtime/` changes (work by António Fernandes, Sebastian Keller)
(#2204)

A couple of other relevant changes from the changelog:

 - !1705 Backport !1683 “Fix the 6-days-until-the-end-of-the-month bug” to
glib-2-66
 - #2224 top bar time is incorrect, timezone map in control center is broken

If you have tzdata2020b and live in a timezone in Europe where DST takes place, please update to glib2-2.66.2 to ensure that your DST transition occurs smoothly.

Thank you,

- Doug
