disclaimer first: i did read the faqs, the speakers are turned on, alsa is compiled in the kernel (v 1.0.8), alsa-lib is also 1.0.8 now, (but I started off with 1.0.7, upgrading to 1.0.8 didn't really change much, i just thought that maybe if they were of the same version in the kernel and in the apps . . .)
so, everything worked fine until i (this could be a spurious correlation) tried running doom3-demo, or maybe recompiling the kernel with scsi support, alsa and arts stopped working, even if i boot with the original kernel . . . (the base distro's sound works fine), so maybe some config files were modified (i didn't run it as root, though)? the card is recognized in the boot scripts: --- Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.8 (Thu Jan 13 09:39:32 2005 UTC).
