disclaimer first:
i did read the faqs, the speakers are turned on, alsa is compiled in the
kernel (v 1.0.8), alsa-lib is also 1.0.8 now, (but I started off with
1.0.7, upgrading to 1.0.8 didn't really change much, i just thought that
maybe if they were of the same version in the kernel and in the apps . . .)

so, everything worked fine until i (this could be a spurious correlation)
tried running doom3-demo, or maybe recompiling the kernel with scsi
support, alsa and arts stopped working, even if i boot with the original
kernel . . . (the base distro's sound works fine), so maybe some config
files were modified (i didn't run it as root, though)?

the card is recognized in the boot scripts:
---
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.8 (Thu Jan 13 09:39:32
2005 UTC).
Mar 20 12:58:29 scyth via82xx: Assuming DXS channels with 48k fixed sample
rate.
Mar 20 12:58:29 scyth Please try dxs_support=1 or dxs_support=4 option
Mar 20 12:58:29 scyth and report if it works on your machine.
Mar 20 12:58:29 scyth ALSA device list:
Mar 20 12:58:29 scyth #0: VIA 8235 with CMI9761 at 0xdc00, irq 169
---
the udev creates the appropriate devices: dsp, adsp, audio and controlC0,
pcmC0D0c, pcmC0D0p, pcmC0D1c, pcmC0D1p, seq, timer;
and nobody complains (xmms, arts, etc.), except that alsaconf doesn't find
the card, while alsamixer does, but i can't change the volume (even "amixer
Master 100% on" didn't do jack), and, of course, there is no sound!

artswrapper is running on alsa, i know that:
---
ps ax | grep arts
 3903 ? S 0:01 artsd -F 8 -S 4096 -a alsa -s 39 -m artsmessage -c drkonqi
-l 3 -f
 3929 ? R 0:06 artscontrol -session
10db637974000111129263700000034910012_1111362740_206450
 4572 ? S 0:00 /opt/kde-3.3.2/bin/artsd -F 10 -S 4096 -s 60 -m artsmessage
-l 3 -f
----

so, somebody, please enlighten me!!!
i don't really want to give up and return to OSS (which works fine)

thank you in advance!!!
