 Yes, they should be started from /etc/rc.d/rc3.d I guess - I hadn't
expected you to reboot.

 Log files are your friend.  Periodically rotating them (i.e. archiving
them) can be useful, but throwing them away just makes things harder for
yourself.  I would expect the logging to be in /var/log/sys.log, failing
that maybe /var/log/kern.log.
