If you're using pppoe then when you get pppd to call your ISP it will create the ppp0 interface and ifconfig will use that. Before you can do pppd call ISP you need to load the driver for the modem. Is there a driver for it?

Judging from Declan's description of his setup, and mentioning that his username/password is stored inside the modem, then I suspect that modem is pretending to be a router - it's actually pretty damn common for DSL providers these days to do that.

As mentioned previously, it looks like you're going to need to enable one of the USB Ethernet network device drivers to get that modem to light up.

Good Luck!
