Just download 2.6.11 and unpack it. Then you can patch all necessary things. Then do a "make oldconfig". It will now ask you only about Options, that are new, all others are taken from the running kernel. then you "make" it. A backup is never bad, but if you put the new Kernel in your Bootmanager without removing the old, I think nothing bad should happen. This way I updated my kernel a while ago, because 2.6.8 has a problem with ATAPI-CD-Burners...
