Hi Matthias Thanks for your idea on More Control and Package Management using Package Users. I'm right now building a BLFS system based on your idea and fallen love with it.
Those who have not heard of more_control_helpers, please refer to http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/hints/downloads/files/more_control_and_pkg_man.txt. Although, it's a great way of installing packages, I have never heard of any Linux distributor use the more_control_helpers. One of the drawbacks of more_control_helpers is, one can easily find in which order the packages are installed by looking at the user id (uid). I don't think any Linux distributor would like to reveal it. One of the ways, we can encourage Linux distributors to use it by randomly creating uids within the given range. This feature should be optional too. May be we can indicate random uids requirement by -ruid: Eg. install_package foo foo foo -ruid So, ones the system is build, distributer has to do is just sort the passwd and the group files by the uid and gid, respectively, so that the order in which the packages are installed is completely lost by retaining all good features of more_control_helpers.
