I actually figured out the correct settings to get around my errors. As mentioned, postfix was constructing a mail envelope with [EMAIL PROTECTED], and everyone on the server end (iol.ie, esat bt, BT Ireland, Oceanfree.net and others all in the same network) didn't like it. When I hacked those to reflect my email 'from' address, all went well in the world.
In a fit of energy, I actually installed postfix last night under LFS-<semi modern> here and _copied_over_ the _working_ config files.
