Hi all... a followon to an earlier thread, now that I actually have the hardware (and specific problems needing help).
I have a DSL router with builtin wireless AP, and an Atheros-based PCI
card for my desktop box. I have the drivers (madwifi) for the latter
installed and apparently working (hotplug loads them), and I've
installed wireless-tools v27.
Based on the scripts someone provided me previously, I'm running the
following commands:
ifconfig ath0 up
iwlist ath0 scan
This reports the correct AP, something like:
root:~# iwlist ath0 scan
ath0 Scan completed :
Cell 01 - Address: 00:0F:3D:B3:F0:68
ESSID:"My Home"
Mode:Master
Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6)
Quality=50/94 Signal level=-45 dBm Noise level=-95 dBm
Encryption key:on
Bit Rate:1 Mb/s
Bit Rate:2 Mb/s
Bit Rate:5 Mb/s
...etc...
Bit Rate:54 Mb/s
Extra:bcn_int=100
I then try to configure it with the following:
iwconfig ath0 essid "My Home"
iwconfig ath0 rate auto
iwconfig ath0 channel 6
iwconfig ath0 mode Managed
iwconfig ath0 key restricted [1] 123456789abcdef0123456789a
iwconfig ath0 key restricted [2] 23456789abcdef0123456789ab
iwconfig ath0 key restricted [3] 3456789abcdef0123456789abc
iwconfig ath0 key restricted [1]
ifconfig ath0 10.1.1.251 netmask 255.0.0.0
No, those aren't the real WEP keys, but I've repeatedly verified that
they're the same ones configured on the AP and on an XP laptop I have
access to. Since I don't have dhcp running (I'd rather avoid it for
now), the IP is static, chosen from outside of the range the APs DHCP
server allocates 10.1.1.(1-250).
No success. Can't even ping the AP, let alone anything on the net. And
the AP apparently can't see my machine either - it lists the laptop as a
connected client, but not my machine. Nothing useful appears in any of
the system logs. Anyone got any ideas?
I get the following output from various commands:
root:~# iwevent (while running config commands)

(Note that even though I didn't specify it in the config, it's managed
to correctly obtain the MAC of the AP).
My next step is to try switching off security on the AP temporarily to
see if that's the issue. In the meantime though, can anyone point to
anything obvious I might have missed?
Simon.
