Set Firefox as the default browser in Gnome (it should do this automatically the first time you run it). Run gnome-default-applications-properties and set the default web browserSpeeking of Thunderbird... I'm just trying it out, but how on earth do I get it to start firefox (or another browser) when I click on a URL in a mail, which *is* highlighted, by the way... ?!
