That should be a good clue. I would assume the gateway that the ISP gave
you is on the same subnet as the IP address they've assigned you.
Double check your prefix.  What does the mask show in Mandrake vs. LFS?

Just to double check, please forgive me if it seems too simple, I just
want to cover all bases:  From the above info, if your IP is
216.139.123.xxx, then a prefix of 24 is probably correct.
216.139.xxx.xxx/16, 216.xxx.xxx.xxx/8 (in most cases(others are reserved
for smaller address ranges)).  Any possibility of attaching another PC
with an address in the same range to test that the card is actaully working?

Doesn't matter unless you are providing multiple options in one variable.
